In early 1950s, Marty was an aspiring and hot headed american table tennis player from a poor background, raised by a single mother in cramped living conditions, with the dream of becoming a world champion. After years of relentless effort, he reaches the finals of the British Open - a regional highly reputed championship but loses terribly to Endo, a calm Japanese table tennis player, leaving him heartbroken and shattered.
Shortly after, Marty is approached by a powerful businessman, Mr. Rockwell, who offers him a large sum of money to play a rematch against Endo - on the condition that Marty deliberately throws the match in front of a live audience.
